The Montreal Expos
The Montreal Expos (French: Les Expos de Montréal) were Montreal's Major League Baseball team from 1969 until 2004. After the 2004 season, the franchise relocated to Washington, D.C. and became the Washington Nationals. The Nationals retained all the Expos' records, player contracts, and minor league affiliates.
The Montreal Expos provided Montrealers with many great moments, great players, and great hope. They were also a team that was ravaged by trades, the 1994 strike and international exchange rates. The Expos simply could not bring in the same kind of loyalty as the Montreal Canadiens. After all, Montreal is primarily a hockey town! Because of these problems, it was impossible for the Expos to remain in Montreal
Although the Expos have relocated to Washington, many loyal Expos fans continue to support the team. There are many fan sites dedicated to the Expos and many Montrealers continue to sport the team's colors. Many sports stores in Montreal continue to sell Montreal Expos hats and jerseys. Till this day, Montrealers are still mad at the MLB for relocating their beloved Expos.
More than 31,000 fans showed up at the Olympic Stadium for the Expos' final home game which ended in a 9-1 loss to the Florida Marlins. The Montreal Expos' 36-season run in Major League Baseball came to an end with an 8-1 loss to the New York Mets. The Olympic Stadium, former home to the Montreal Expos continues to be used for various events, but it has never hosted another professional baseball team since.
