Sugaring off in Montreal
Sugar shacks are a seasonal ritual all around the province of Québec. Sugar shacks ( Cabane à Sucre In French) around the Montreal area allow visitors to discover how some of their favorite syrup products are made. Many of these establishments will allow you to tour their sugar bush trail for a first hand view on how maple sap is tapped from our trees and then collected. But the most enjoyable part of visiting a sugar shack is the maple syrup.
Sugar shacks usually offer a variety of activities for all seasons. However, the best season to go sugaring off is during the spring. There, you can have traditional sugar shack meals such as 100% maple syrup, baked beans, maple-cured ham, pea soup, "oreilles de crisse" (fried strips of salt pork), omelets, and maple-sweetened desserts like sugar pie, crepes and "grands-pères" (dumplings poached in maple syrup). A trip to the sugar shack is never complete until you have warm maple taffy poured over fresh snow. The traditional hot maple taffy is usually served on a bed of fresh snow and scooped up with wooden sticks.
Sugaring off time is also the perfect occasion for other outdoor activities such as a sleigh ride, or a hike through the woods. There are many maple syrup operations not far from the Montreal area and all welcome visitors at sugaring off time. A visit to a sugar shack will undoubtedly leave you with some fond memories and a desire to return again some day.
